ISSFHK Fencing Championships 2026-27: A Parent's Guide (U14 & U20)
Chinese version中文版 here If your child fences and goes to an international school in Hong Kong, sooner or later you will hear about the ISSFHK Fencing Championships. Here is a parent-friendly guide from Hong Kong Fencing Master: what ISSFHK is, how the fencing championship works, the two age categories this season, and how to know when your child is ready.

What is ISSFHK?
ISSFHK is the International Schools Sports Federation of Hong Kong, the league that runs inter-school sport for Hong Kong's international schools. Its member schools compete against each other across the school year in sports such as football, basketball, badminton, swimming and fencing. See the official ISSFHK website for the list of member schools and season calendars.
The ISSFHK Fencing Championship is the fencing championship for international schools in Hong Kong. It is smaller in scale than the HKSSF school championships, but it has a more targeted audience: every fencer is an international school student, so your child competes against peers from similar schools.
How is the ISSFHK Fencing Championship organised?
Entry is through your school only. Parents cannot enter a child directly. Your school's PE or sports department registers its fencers, so tell the school early if your child wants to compete.
It is an individual competition, with separate boys' and girls' events in all three weapons: foil, épée and sabre.
It usually follows the standard format: pool rounds first, then direct elimination (knockout) rounds.
Timing: older editions were held in January (for example January 2019 and January 2020), but more recent championships have moved to December. The 2024 edition was reported in mid-December 2024.
2026-27: two age categories and the date
Because ISSFHK is smaller in scale, it runs only two age categories, U14 and U20, for each gender and each weapon. Across ISSFHK sport, age groups are based on age on 1 August of the school year: for example, U20 means a full-time student under 20 on 1 August of the current academic year (HKIS athletics handbook). The exact birth-year cut-offs for fencing are set in the ISSFHK fencing circular, so please confirm them with your school.
Date: Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December 2026,Venue and entry deadline: CDNIS please consult your school for respective deadline, You can also see it in our 2026-27 competition calendar.
How big is it? Last year's numbers
According to the entry list figures shared with Hong Kong Fencing Master, last year's championship had 240 fencers in total:
U14: 130 fencers
U20: 110 fencers
Foil: 94 fencers (about 39%)
Épée: 87 fencers (about 36%)
Sabre: 59 fencers (about 25%)
So foil and épée are the most popular weapons, but there is a healthy sabre field too, and every weapon is contested.

How is ISSFHK different from HKSSF and HKFA events?
ISSFHK: the fencing championship for international school students, entered by the school. Smaller than HKSSF, with U14 and U20 categories for each gender and weapon.
HKSSF (Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation): the local school league, with Grade A, B and C categories and separate primary and secondary competitions, also entered through the school.
HKFA (Fencing Association of Hong Kong, China): open club-level championships such as the U14 and Age Group championships. Fencers enter individually and need HKFA membership plus an HKID or Hong Kong birth certificate.

No. ISSFHK is an inter-school competition, so entries go through your child's international school.
