HKSSF vs ISSFHK Fencing: A Parents' Guide

If your child fences at a Hong Kong secondary school, two inter-school competitions matter most: the HKSSF Inter-School Fencing Competition and ISSFHK. Both are for secondary students, but they are built for different school communities. This guide from Hong Kong Fencing Master compares them with real 2025-26 numbers so you can plan your child's season.

What is HKSSF fencing?

The Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation (HKSSF) runs the official inter-school fencing championships open to every secondary school in Hong Kong, local and international. In 2025-26, fencers from over 170 secondary schools took part.

The competition is run by two main organisers:

Our Head Coach, Lau Kwok Kin, has been appointed Technical Director of the HKSSF New Territories fencing competition in recent years, so our team knows the format, rules and refereeing standards from the inside.

What this means for parents: épée is the biggest weapon at HKSSF (43%), while foil leads at ISSFHK (39%). Sabre is the smallest in both (22% and 25%), so sabre fencers usually face smaller fields and have a better chance of reaching the later rounds.

What is ISSFHK?

ISSFHK is the inter-school fencing competition for international schools in Hong Kong. It is smaller but more targeted, with two age groups: U14 and U20. Last season it had 240 fencers (U14: 130, U20: 110), split foil 94, épée 87 and sabre 59. The 2026-27 edition is on 5–6 December 2026. Read our full ISSFHK guide. Our track record

Harrow International School, supported by our Head Coach, has won the ISSFHK overall title four years running. Our coaches prepare students from many schools for both HKSSF and ISSFHK.

What level does my child need?

For both competitions we recommend your child reaches at least Badge Level 4. At this level they can fence full bouts safely, understand right-of-way (for foil and sabre) and handle competition pressure. Our HKSSF preparation camp helps students get competition-ready.
