Fencing Plastron Guide: Understanding the Use of Plastrons in Fencing
If your child has just started fencing, you will soon hear the word "plastron". At Hong Kong Fencing Master in Central, every foil student wears one under the jacket. Here is what parents need to know: what it is, why your child needs it, and how to choose the right size.
Fencing is a sport that combines agility, strategy, and precision. To ensure safety and enhance performance, fencers rely on specialized protective gear. One essential piece of this equipment is the plastron. This guide will explore the role of the plastron in fencing, its importance, and how to choose the right one for your needs.
What Is a Fencing Plastron? A Comprehensive Fencing Plastron Guide
A fencing plastron is an underarm protector worn beneath the jacket. It provides an extra layer of protection to the fencer’s dominant side, which is more exposed during bouts. Made from durable materials, the plastron helps prevent injuries from blade strikes and thrusts.
The plastron is typically made of strong fabric such as nylon or Kevlar, designed to absorb impact and reduce the risk of cuts or bruises. It covers the torso and extends under the arm, where the jacket alone may not offer sufficient protection.
A plastron is required at fencing competitions, and the rules on which type you need are strict. See the competition section below.

Why Is a Plastron Important in Fencing?
The plastron plays a critical role in fencing safety. Here are some key reasons why it is indispensable:
Extra Protection: The plastron covers vulnerable areas that the jacket might miss, especially under the arm and on the side of the body that faces the opponent.
Injury Prevention: It reduces the risk of cuts, bruises, and punctures from the opponent’s blade.
Comfort and Fit: Wearing a plastron can improve the fit of the jacket, preventing it from shifting during movement.
Compliance with Regulations: Many fencing organisations require plastrons for official competitions to meet safety standards.
For example, a foil fencer who frequently lunges and extends their arm will benefit from the plastron’s extra padding on the dominant side. This can prevent painful hits and allow the fencer to focus on technique rather than discomfort.
What Piece of Armour Is a Plastron?
Historically, the term "plastron" referred to a piece of armour that protected the chest and abdomen. In modern fencing, the plastron serves a similar protective function but is adapted for the sport’s specific needs.
The fencing plastron is a lightweight, flexible garment worn under the jacket. It is designed to shield the torso, particularly the side facing the opponent. Unlike traditional armour, it does not restrict movement but enhances safety.
The plastron is often secured with straps or Velcro to keep it in place during fast-paced bouts. It is available in different sizes and styles to accommodate various body types and fencing disciplines.

How to Choose the Right Plastron for Your Child
Selecting the right plastron is crucial for both safety and comfort. Here are some practical tips to help you make the best choice:
Material Quality: Look for plastrons made from high-quality, durable materials such as Kevlar or heavy-duty nylon. These materials offer better protection and last longer.
Fit and Size: The plastron should fit snugly without restricting movement. Check sizing charts and try on different models if possible.
Left or Right Side: Since the plastron protects the dominant side, ensure you choose the correct version (left or right) based on your fencing hand.
Certification: Verify that the plastron meets safety standards set by fencing organisations like the FIE or national bodies.
Comfort Features: Some plastrons include moisture-wicking fabrics or breathable mesh panels to keep you cool during intense bouts.
For example, a beginner foil fencer might start with a basic plastron that meets safety standards but upgrade to a more advanced model with enhanced comfort features as they progress.
Which plastron does my child need for competitions in Hong Kong?
Plastrons are rated by how much force the fabric can resist, measured in Newtons (N). The two ratings you will see are 350N and 800N.
Training: 350N is the standard plastron for training.
Local club-organised competitions: in our experience, most local club-organised competitions accept a 350N plastron, but always check the event's entry notice.
Events organised by the Fencing Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA): an 800N plastron is required. HKFA's equipment notice says fencers of all events "must wear at least 800N under-plastron which approved by the FIE, CFA Pro" (HKFA equipment notice, updated May 2026). Its competition notice lists events including the Under-14, Age Groups, Junior and Hong Kong Open championships, and says participants "must wear an 800N under-plastron which conforms to the FIE rules" (HKFA competition notice).
Chest protector: at HKFA events, all girls' and women's fencers and all U14 boys must also wear a chest protector.
FIE and international events: FIE rules require an 800N under-plastron, and clothing must carry the FIE homologation label (FIE Material Rules).
At HKFA competitions, plastrons are checked at weapon control, and only kit with a "PASS" label may be used. A fencer without approved kit can be eliminated.
Parent tip: if your child plans to enter HKFA events, buying an 800N FIE (or CFA Pro) approved plastron from the start saves buying twice. Ask your coach before you buy.
Sizing for growing kids
Children grow quickly, so check the fit of your child's plastron and jacket at the start of each term. It should sit snugly under the arm and across the chest without limiting movement. A plastron that is too small leaves gaps; one that is far too big can bunch up under the jacket. Ask your child's coach to check the fit before you buy a new one.
Caring for Your Plastron: Maintenance Tips for Longevity
Proper care of your plastron ensures it remains effective and comfortable over time. Follow these simple maintenance tips:
Regular Cleaning: Wash your plastron according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually by hand or on a gentle cycle. Avoid harsh detergents.
Drying: Air dry your plastron away from direct sunlight or heat sources to prevent fabric damage.
Inspection: Routinely check for tears, worn areas, or loose straps. Replace the plastron if it shows significant wear.
Storage: Store your plastron in a cool, dry place. Avoid folding it tightly to maintain its shape.
By taking good care of your plastron, you can extend its lifespan and maintain the level of protection it provides.
